The Kanwar Yatra is the annual Shravan pilgrimage in which devotees of Shiva — kanwariyas — collect holy Ganga jal from Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri or Sultanganj and carry it on foot to offer at Shiva temples. In 2026 the yatra runs through the first half of Shravan, from July 30 to August 12, with the jal traditionally offered on Shravan Shivratri — August 12, 2026.

    Kanwar Yatra 2026: Key Dates

    • Yatra window begins: Thursday, July 30, 2026 (start of Shravan, North Indian calendar)
    • Jal offering — Shravan Shivratri: August 12, 2026
    • Many kanwariyas time their walk to reach their home Shiva temple a day before Shivratri

    Meaning and Origin

The kanwar is the bamboo pole balanced on the shoulder with pots of Ganga jal hanging at both ends. Tradition names Ravana as the first kanwariya — said to have carried Ganga jal to offer on the Shivling after the samudra manthan, cooling the poison Shiva held in his throat. Other traditions credit Parashuram with beginning the practice. In every telling, the essence is the same: carrying the river to Mahadev as an act of devotion and endurance.

    Rules of the Yatra

    • The kanwar never touches the ground. When resting, it is hung on a stand or tree branch; if it touches the ground, the jal is considered khandit and devotees traditionally return to refill.
    • Many kanwariyas walk barefoot for the entire route.
    • No alcohol, no non-vegetarian food, no intoxicants for the duration of the yatra.
    • Conduct is kept satvik — discipline, simplicity and continuous remembrance of Shiva with chants of Bol Bam.

    Types of Kanwar

    • Dak Kanwar: a non-stop relay — the kanwariya keeps moving until the jal is offered, often run like a courier chain.
    • Khari Kanwar: the kanwar is never set down; a companion holds it upright whenever the carrier rests.
    • Dandi Kanwar: the hardest path — devotees measure the route with full-body prostrations.

    Protection for the Journey

Many kanwariyas wear rudraksha — the bead of Shiva — or a karungali band through the yatra for protection and steadiness on the road.
